Brief History:
VicharVedh (the phrase means “quest/inquiry of thoughts”) was launched by progressive thought leaders in Maharashtra in the year 1993. The objective was to energize discourse on humanitarian, secular, democratic values, as well as to explore social, economic, political alternatives and way-forward towards building up of a developed, egalitarian Nation. The platform stopped its activities when the pioneers thought that they had covered all the relevant topics through 15 annual conferences in different parts of Maharashtra.
Why re-launch? We revitalized VicharVedh in 2016, as a dire need to promote critical thinking in all fields of social sciences in the times of Post Truth, times in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.
We believe that the intolerance in India is growing along several dimensions, and is a threat to the free thinking and expression. Therefore, there is a need for individuals, organizations, and institutions of all shades to think beyond their own narrow visions, and collectively promote creative thinking, critical thinking, and free expression of new ideas.
VicharVedh is a platform to educate Indians.
VicharVedh is open to all who believe in values enshrined in the Constitution of India.
Objective: Educate Indians to Think Critically and Creatively in Social Sciences.
Activities:
Vichar Veche – Short Educational Films: As an on-going process we are producing thought provoking short films on various topics. The shooting is done by amateur volunteers. Although the audio visual quality may not be the best that can be achieved, we are emphasizing more on the richness/ relevance of thought and its quickest circulation to a wider audience. We have published 510 educational films during the last 6 years. The video films are freely available on Internet YouTube to all viewers at ‘VicharVedh’. There are 25,700 subscribers to this channel and viewers regularly engage in free, critical discussions. Some videos have been viewed by more than 2,00,000 citizens.
Expression through multimedia: We are involving creative writers, poets, poster designers, cartoonists, painters, musicians and street play groups in VicharVedh movement. VicharVedh churns thoughts though all these expressions.
Annual Conferences:
Annual Conference 2017: The first annual conference of the re-launched VicharVedh was held on the theme: ‘Indian Nationalism: Ideology, Forms and Challenges’ on January 20, 21, 22 in Pune. About 600 thinkers and young activists, participated in the deliberations at this conference. Play writer Atamjit Singh and Justice (Retd.) Hemant Gokhale delivered key-note addresses.
Annual Conference 2018: Theme: ‘Affordable, Non-sectarian Education for All’. Apoorvanand Jha and Jandhalya Tilak, addressed the plenary sessions.
Annual Conference 2019: Theme: ‘Creating Employment and Reduction of Inequalities’. Gopal Guru, Anil Sadgopal and Achut Godbole addressed the plenary sessions.
Annual Conference 2020: theme: ‘Globalization’. Mira Nanda delivered the Key Note speech. Bhalachandra Mungekar and Manisha Gupte addressed the plenary sessions.
Annual Conference was not held in years 2021 and 2022 because of Covid pandemic; likely to be resumed in 2023.
Nibandha Manthan (Essays Churning Thoughts):
Nibandh Manthan is churning of thoughts through writing essays. Good essays are printed in the form of a booklet. 1230 essays were received in the year 2019. Essays are received mainly from young persons from rural areas and housewives and working women.
Charcha Gat (Discussion Groups):
About 10 to 15 youngsters meet in a group and discuss one of the thought provoking and informative speeches on the VicharVedh YouTube channel. They also write their comments in the ‘commentary’ section provided by YouTube. This activity encourages participants to critically evaluate and understand the subject rather than passively accept the speaker’s views. At present, there are five discussion groups in Pune where participants meet every week. We plan to spread this activity in at least ten towns in Maharashtra in the year 2022.
